A metal mesh curtain is a flexible woven fabric that hangs, folds and moves like a textile but is made of metal. Gecho produces woven mesh curtains for interiors, window treatments, room screening and fireplace enclosures, in stainless steel, brass, copper and aluminum. Because the mesh is supplied by the panel or by the running metre, it can be made to fit an existing track, rod or frame.
Why use a mesh curtain instead of a textile or a rigid panel
A fabric curtain fades, holds odour and cannot be used near a heat source. A rigid mesh panel is dimensionally fixed. A metal mesh curtain sits between them:
- It folds and stacks. Mounted on a track, the curtain compresses to a fraction of its open width, so it can cover a large opening without needing a large storage pocket.
- It is dimensionally stable. Woven metal does not stretch, shrink or fade, so the drop stays correct over years of use.
- It tolerates heat. With the correct wire and hanging clearance, mesh is suitable for fireplace screens, where textile is not an option.
- It filters light rather than blocking it. Depending on the weave, the curtain reads as a shimmering veil while still allowing daylight through.
Where mesh curtains are used
Window treatments. Mesh curtains temper daylight and add texture at a window without the bulk of a heavy drape. They work particularly well on tall or irregular openings where a fabric curtain would be difficult to pleat consistently.
Room screening and soft partitions. A mesh curtain on a ceiling track screens a space at night and opens it up during the day. This is common in restaurants, galleries and hotel lobbies where the room has to change function.
Fireplace enclosures. A woven mesh screen in front of an open fire contains sparks while keeping the fire visible. For this application the wire diameter and the clearance from the heat source both matter, and the mesh should not be coated with a finish that will discolour.
Ceiling and wall features. Hung vertically or draped in swags, mesh curtains are used as ceiling rafts and wall features where a rigid panel would look too hard.

Hanging, tracks and hardware
How the curtain hangs determines whether it moves well:
- Track and rollers. The mesh is fitted with eyelets, rings or a sewn header and hung on rollers. The track must be rated for the total curtain weight, which we confirm at quotation.
- Header type. A wave header gives an even, regular fold. A pinch-pleat header gives a deeper fold and a more formal look.
- Bottom weighting. A light bottom bar keeps the curtain hanging straight and stops it swinging. It is essential on tall drops.
- Fireplace screens. These are usually hung on a fixed rod or a short track directly in front of the opening, with the mesh standing clear of the fire.
Because the mesh drop does not stretch, the curtain must be made to the finished height. Measure the finished drop from the underside of the track to the floor or sill, and tell us whether the curtain is to clear the floor or touch it.
FAQ
Can a mesh curtain be used on an existing curtain track?
Often yes. Tell us the track make and model and the total mesh weight, and we will confirm whether the existing rollers are rated for it. If they are not, we can supply a suitable track and rollers with the curtain.
How do I measure for a mesh curtain?
Measure the finished drop from the underside of the track to the point where the curtain should end, and the track width. For a gathered curtain, allow roughly 1.5 to 2 times the track width in mesh so the folds read properly.
Is mesh safe in front of an open fire?
Woven stainless steel mesh is used as a spark screen in front of open fires. The correct wire diameter and the standing distance from the fire depend on the appliance. Tell us the appliance and opening size and we will advise.
Does the mesh rust in a bathroom or kitchen?
SS304 is normally adequate for domestic bathrooms. For coastal locations, wet rooms with frequent cleaning, or anywhere chlorides are present, specify SS316.
Will brass or copper change colour over time?
Yes. Both develop a patina naturally. If you want the colour to stay as supplied, specify a clear protective coat or a PVD finish.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
The minimum order is 10 m² and the lead time is one week. Larger or more complex quantities are quoted individually — send us the sizes and we will confirm a delivery date.
